Birkdale is situated at the end of Swaledale and is one of the smallest and most unspoilt of the Yorkshire Dales, with wonderful scenic views of untouched field barns and isolated farmhouses. It is these views that bring people flocking to the area summer or winter.

The hamlet of Birkdale is 2 miles from Keld and walkers can enjoy waterfalls like East Gill (Grid Reference NY896011) and Currack Force (Grid Reference NY888016) , which is supplied by Stonesdale Beck. Kisdon Fell rises 1,636ft and is only for the experienced fell walker, good kit and map-reading (Grid Ref NY898010) abilities are essential!

The Weston side of the fell is host to a site of special scientific interest because of its wild flowers and beautiful plants.
