“The Power of Compassion” Performance by the Tashi Lhunpo Monks
Sunday 22 July 2018
2pm – 3pm
This summer, as part of our weeklong visit from eight Tibetan monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in South India, we are holding a series of performances and workshops at Harewood.
Join us for a special performance of “The Power of Compassion” with masked dances, traditional music and chanted prayers, as they would be performed in the courtyard or prayer hall of a Tibetan monastery. It will give a glimpse into the magical world of Tibetan Buddhist ritual, a world of mysticism and re-incarnation that has inspired audiences in theatres and at festivals across Europe and the UK.
From the contemplative, mesmerising chant of Buddhist texts to the swirl of the masked and costumed dancers, accompanied by music performed on musical instruments that include trumpets traditionally made from human leg bones, skull-drums, bells, cymbals and the mighty dungchen (Tibetan long horns), the performance evokes the atmosphere of ancient Tibet, an introduction to an extraordinary and endangered culture. It will be an experience of a sacred culture made accessible to all by introductory explanations by the monks.
About Tashi Lhunpo
Found by the 1st Dalai Lama in the 15th century and the seat of the Panchen Lama, Tashi Lhunpo is one of the most important monasteries in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Now re-established in exile in South India, it is once again one of the major centres of Buddhist learning, famed for its artistic traditions, masked dances and sacred music.
