Market life in Ripon goes back over a thousand years and is thought to be part of St Wilfred’s feast he died on a Thursday and pilgrims would come to pay homage this would then attract more and more stall holders selling there produce to the pilgrims.
The monasteries would sell cattle and sheep and wool at the markets so it was a valuable income to them it also enabled them to pay the clergy and build churches.
